The TGSC is a National Resource Center created in 2003 through funding from the U.S. Department of Education. It is part of a Florida-wide consortium of universities – the Florida Network for Global Studies. The TGSC is housed within the University of Florida International Center and has affiliated faculty across the entire campus. The TGSC promotes interdisciplinary research, supports faculty and students through development of curricula and academic programs, sponsors cultural activities and guest speakers on transnational and global issues, and provides outreach.
Like all Title VI centers, TGSC focuses on language, area studies, and teacher training to foster interest and skills in international education.
The Center’s current themes are:
Several UF faculty have received three year research awards related to the themes of the Center. These awards are being used to fund seminars, speakers, workshops, literature reviews, travel, and collaborative activities related to the above themes.
The TGSC is part of a Florida-wide consortium of universities: the Florida Network for Global Studies (FNGS). FNGS members include the Center for Transnational and Comparative Studies at Florida International University (FIU), the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Center for Global Solutions at the University of South Florida (USF), the Global Perspectives, President's Office at the University of Central Florida (UCF), and the Office of International Education and Development at Florida A&M University (FAMU). TGSC and the consortium, FNGS, promote and coordinate interdisciplinary research, instruction and outreach related to transnational and global issues.
A number of UF faculty have received three year research awards related to the themes of the Center. These awards are being used to fund seminars, speakers, workshops, literature reviews, travel, and collaborative activities.
FNGS provides annual curriculum development awards to faculty in five universities: UF, FIU, USF, UCF, and FAMU. The awards will be used for the development of new courses or modification of existing courses that emphasize topics related to transnational, international, and global issues.
A number of workshops and conferences are associated with the FNGS. These workshops and conferences cover the themes of the Center and either take place in Gainesville or at one of the partner university locations.
FNGS provides support to the UF and FIU libraries to acquire the most current literature on transnational and global studies issues. We now have available the entire World Bank electronic library. For more information, click here.
TGSC and FNGS provide a series of outreach activities for K-12 teachers, community college instructors, and the general public in Alachua County and throughout Florida.
