Content Area(s) Covered: Science- classification, Protist Kingdom, Algae as Food

Anticipated Duration: 50 minute class period

Rationale: To appreciate the value of the organisms in the Protist Kingdom

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to identify common Protists.
  2. Students will learn the common name for Protists.
  3. Students will be able to list some common products that contain marine algae.
  4. Students will be able to list common food sources of marine algae.
  5. Student will be able to explain the value of algae to various countries and cultures.

Procedures:

  1. Students may work in pairs and complete the lab stations in any order, but make sure there are only a couple of students at each station at one time.
  2. Students are to hand in completed lab at the end of the class period.

Informal/Formal Assessments:

I grade for thoroughness and completion.  10 points for each of the eight sections completed and 20 points for participation/clean up/behavior.

Evaluation/Reflection:

Students loved this lab. Be prepared for abundant enthusiasm as they sample the seaweeds.
